About Bel Canto Productions™

Bel Canto Productions™

Bel Canto Productions™ is a service of Perpendicular Systems, the Technology Division of Virtual Harmonics, LLC, providing composable business technology architecture, design and consulting services for distributed music production, performance and distribution.

Based on my research at stanford's CCRMA

Our methods were initially inspired by a class which I attended at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics in the technologies they have developed to enable geographically distributed music rehearsal and performance.  This product, Jacktrip, and others such as JamKazam allow musicians to connect from different geographical locations and play together, and increasingly Zoom and other commercial video conferencing products are adding "live performance" options as well.  These new capabilities are the technology backbone of my private music studio, Virtual Piano Studio™ and the enabling factor that makes some practices of this work possible.

About Bel Canto Blues™

Bel Canto Blues™: A Practical Collaboration Model

An innovative music production practice

initiated by iofthestorm.net

What This Is

Bel Canto Blues is a repeatable music production workflow designed to bring musicians together briefly, record real performances, and release finished recordings without platform overhead, competitive framing, or long-term obligation.

This is not a contest.
This is not an incubator.
This is not a social network.

It is a working production practice.

Sessions may involve:

  • one rehearsal followed immediately by recording
  • live capture at jams, salons, or informal gatherings
  • remote collaboration using high-quality audio + simple video
  • spontaneous, one-take or near-one-take performances

The focus is on completion, not perfection.

Why This Exists

Most contemporary music platforms extract value from musicians while returning little or nothing in compensation, control, or continuity.

Bel Canto Blues is built on a different premise:

Harmony is not a social convention only.
It is a  economic activity.

This project exists to demonstrate that:

  • musicians can collaborate without competing
  • recordings can be produced without long-term contracts
  • value can be created, shared, and sustained
  • profit and fairness are not opposites

This is a for-profit practice, intentionally designed to remain human-scale.

What Gets Recorded

The initial focus is on:

  • public-domain blues, folk, and roots material
  • traditional forms re-interpreted through contemporary sensibilities
  • arrangements that respect the source while allowing personal voice

Future projects may expand in scope, but clarity and rights simplicity are core design principles.

How Sessions Work

Sessions are intentionally lightweight.Examples:

  • one afternoon rehearsal → recording
  • live performance → capture
  • remote session using JackTrip / JamKazam for sound + Zoom/Meet for video
  • small in-person gatherings with minimal gear

Recordings are treated as finished artifacts, not raw content to be endlessly optimized.

What I Provide

As the initiating artist and producer, I provide:

  • musical direction and collaboration
  • production leadership
  • recording coordination (in-person or remote)
  • editorial coherence
  • integration into a long-term content library
  • continuity across recordings, releases, and media

This allows collaborators to focus on playing, not logistics.

How Value Is Created

Each finished recording becomes:

  • a distributable sound recording
  • reusable media collateral
  • material for promotion, education, and derivative projects
  • part of a growing, coherent catalog

Recordings may be released through:

  • digital distribution
  • physical formats
  • performance-linked releases
  • related art, video, and media projects

This creates long-tail value, not one-off exposure.

Rights & Revenue (High Level)

This project does not rely on blanket rights grabs.Instead:

  • terms are defined per project
  • performers retain rights to their performances under agreed conditions
  • I retain ownership of my performances and productions
  • revenue structures are explicit and negotiated
  • participation is opt-in, not assumed

There is no platform dependency and no hidden downstream capture.

Who This Is For

This model works best for musicians who:

  • are comfortable recording without excessive rehearsal
  • value collaboration over competition
  • want their work finished and released
  • are curious, skilled, and reliable
  • prefer clarity to hype

No auditions. No rankings. No public judgment.
